Paul Smith Evian

Evian have joined forces with Paul Smith to launch a special edition water bottle designed by the clothes designer.

Kylie Water

The branded bottles will feature 5 different coloured bottle tops to collect.

Paul Smith continues the annual designer bottle tradition, which began with a limited edition design by Christian Lacroix followed by Jean Paul Gaultier.

The British designer has included his trademark stripes on this latest edition of branded Evian water bottles.

Back in 2002 Evian collaborated with Kylie Minogue to supply free bottles of ‘Kylie’ water to concert goers on her Fever Tour. Each bottle was branded with Kylie’s name across the bottle in place of the Evian logo.

Last week we showed you a great Christmas window display that we’d seen on Youtube. It showed off what retail store Macy did with their window last year.

Not to be left behind, this year, the city of Cleveland have decided to bring the city’s most historic building into the 21st Century.

In a bid to reestablish itself as a prominent landmark (it was used as the shop front in the 1940s Hollywood movie A Christmas Story), the public building that would usually be promoting local events through the medium of posters is instead using the latest technology to brighten up its window displays.

The local council will be bringing the window back to life with a multicolour fusion of digital media and Bluetooth technology. We’re not entirely sure what this will involve, but it sounds very interesting, definitely a novel way of represent ion of a window display

Big retail outlets, the likes of John Lewis, JD Sports, Next, all spend a great amount of cash on attractive window displays.

Why? Because they realise that window displays are a great medium for advertising. If they can add that extra sparkle to their retail outlet, predominantly through their window displays, but also via their point of sale, shop displays, then you, the punter, are more likely to come in and spend your cash.

While they employ the services of retail design agencies like us, if you’re on a budget, you can still design your shop window to have the WOW factor. All you need is to follow a few simple rules and be creative.

At Design 4 Retail we’ve had years of experience delivering top quality displays and have a few tricks up our sleeves for those on a budget.

Shop for window display merchandise when you can. With the increase in pound shops, ebay and charity shops, there’s always bargains to be had. If you see any merchandise that could be used as displays, however obscure, if they don’t cost the earth, buy them and store them away until the time you might be able to use them.

Use colours, shapes and materials. Bling isn’t just for the movie stars. A bit of sparkle attracts customers attention. Then using different shapes and sizes to help guide the customer who will naturally scan the window display. Mix the items you want to get rid of together with the latest products and produce an eclectic mix of design.

Check out your competitors window displays. It doesn’t hurt to have a look at what the competition is doing to get some great ideas, particularly if it’s the bigger stores. Stand outside and observe their customers – see what attracts them, as much as what attracts you. If it works for them, it could work for you.

Tis the season to be jolly. It’s coming coming to Christmas so a bit of tinsel and baubles are great. Use the different seasons and events as a theme for your window display. So, if the local carnival is coming to town, use that as inspiration. During the January sales, bring out the boxes and show a bargain environment… you get the picture.

Use a bit of elbow grease. Finally, if your windows have smudges or condensation all over them it will make it difficult to see your fantastic window designs. So drop a spot of vinegar in some hot water and give your windows, both inside and outside, a good scrub.

If you use these simple tips and keep your window displays fresh you too will have some tip top displays for people to talk about.

Following on from the success of the restaurant in Popham, thanks to a revamped menu by Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal and new restaurant design by award winning architect and designer Ab Rogers, Little Chef re-lauched two new restaurants in York and Kettering West.

As is our curious nature here at D4R, we couldn’t resist popping in and trying out the new menu…

But was all the fuss worth it? In a word, yes. The restaurant interior has managed to retain the traditional Little Chef feel but avoided the cheap and dreary elements that might have put off diners in the past. The restaurant was bright, fun and friendly, and the toilets were hilarious, playing “food glorious food” or an excerpt from a Spike Milligan poem as you walk through the door. Small details such as butterflies on the ceiling beams, 60s-style pendant lighting and food-based quotes on the walls and staff unifoms really finish off the fun atmosphere.

And the food? Superb. We will definitely be going back!

Back in the 1920 window displays were the big advertising tool. If you wanted customers to purchase your products you had to pull them in with tantalising imagery.

Almost a hundred years later things haven’t really changed, retail stores are still trying their best to come up with the best designs possible to draw the punters in through their door and spend their hard earned cash.

Opening its doors for the first time in the land of leeks, John Lewis has made a serious style statement with the arrival of its second largest store in the Partnership. The Cardiff-based four-floored flagship store stretches across 170,000 sq ft and does exactly what it says on the tin.

As a flagship, the John Lewis Partnership has made a bold shift in terms of retail design and presented a much more fashion-focused layout, re-establishing the company as a serious contender in the department store fashion stakes after years of being sidelined by the likes of Selfridges.
