Modern window displays use 3D projection

3D appears to be the new black in the world of film, and with a rash of 3D films coming out this summer its popularity does not seem to be diminishing. The first film to be filmed entirely in 3D however, was James Cameron's multi-award winning epic, Avatar.

With that in mind, and to celebrate its launch on DVD, the Oxford Street flagship store for HMV have commissioned a spectacular 3D panel as a show-stopping backdrop to their Avatar window display.Possibly the largest 3D lenticular display ever made in the U.K., it uses minute lenses called lenticules which are placed on one side of a special type of film. Two separate images are created on the other side of the film. The lenticular lenses then work to direct the light passing through the film onto the eye in such a way that the brain receives and decodes the information as a three dimensional image.

The HMV display is made up of four panels, measuring 5 x 2.4 metres. A second display has also been created for their shop in Bond Street. Taking two weeks to complete, from file delivery to the final product, it may not have been quite as time consuming as the creation of the actual film itself, but it is still a fitting homage to the epic it was inspired by.

The clever adaptation of the technology used in the film itself to promote it will undoubtedly appeal to its many fans and engage with the target market it is intended for.

The implications for the retail design industry with the development of and increasing ability to use new technologies like this are as exciting as the technologies themselves.
