Barneys Window Display gets pulled.Tuesday, 28 July 2009

It’s not long now before the second movie in the extremely successful teen-book world Twilight is released in America. The teen romance centres around vampires and werewolves, with a dash of blood to add a bit of flavour.

And it would seem that luxury New York retailer Barneys has got a bit carried away with the Vampire and blood theme of the film.

The store created a dramatic window display using blood-spattered mannequins fending off attackers. Probably not the most tasteful display they could have used, but on the other hand it’s made national press over in the US and even we’re talking about it now.

The Manhattan store has obviously removed the window display in the mean time but, it has opened the debate again on where art and creativity start, and bad taste stops. Should all window displays be nice and sedate, or is there room for something that might instigate discussion?

Personally, when we’re creating window displays, or indeed any kind of in-store retail material, the customer is always at the forefront of our minds. While we strive to be as creative as possible, we don’t want to alienate anyone in the process. Its a fine line to tread but I think we’re getting it just right.
